Japan 2019 - Index Thread -
Good morning, I'm on my way to Onomichi, a town that was recommended by a friend I met at my language exchange, interestingly at the Okinawan restaurant the man I talked to lit up when I brought up I was going there saying it was a great place so I'm excited
-
To follow up on that again, it all started with the classic "where are you from" [...] "no, where are you REALLY from" when saying I was coming from Canada wasn't what he wanted to know, we talked for a while
-
I learned he was a reporter for a local paper and studied abroad in New Zealand at one point, for a Hiroshima native he was really trying to sell me Okinawa maybe because he's a regular at this place (or maybe that's why he's a regular)
-
At one point he even had them give me a sip of some Okinawan liquor, and when he mentioned the aged ones tasted better and I wondered if he could tell the difference, he just got me a sip of a 7 year one and even I could (but maybe it was placebo)
-
It was a fun discussion and the ease of talking to people in Hiroshima further cements it as one of my favorite places, not sure why but it's just easier here for me!
-
The Onomichi tourism site is definitely stuck in the keyword spam SEO optimization days though
-
Ok I'm here now what

Quick stop at the art museum at the top of the hill
-
These paintings remind me a lot of Caracas paintings since they're both around hills, though water is a lot more prominent here
-
Ohh I like this one
-
Wait I love this artist, Okuyama Tamie
-
This viewing area is not bad either
-
I bought this art book for Okuyama Tamie because I just really really liked the calm and aetherial vibe from that series...
-
I guess this works in the spring when it's lined with Sakura blooms
-
In case anyone was wondering what the path of literature actually meant
-
On the way down at least the city views aren't washed out by the morning sun
-
Soundtrack while walking for food
-
Ok
-
This part of town is so picturesque
-
I ramen
-
Store is cute I was told I should try Onomichi style ramen
-
It was pretty good, it uses flat, noodles, shoyu with some fish component and I think chicken for broth and some fat chunks just chilling
-
Also got their soy coated karaage and it was excellent, so juicy
-
Went to this ice cream place o was recommended and got the three flavor pack, matcha, black sesame and egg, black sesame is my weakness as it's always been, also tried the "lemon squash" which seems to be a lemon soda since I saw a lot of places here offering it
-
Some shots from the seaside on the way to the station
-
Truth be told there were a few more things I could hav seen but I wanted to get back to o Hiroshima while it was still light out, I messed it up a bit because I keep forgetting gmaps
-
Includes Nozomi trains and afaik I can't disable that, so my transfer timing was totally off
-
The Atomic Bomb Dome still makes me a bit emotional for what it represents, I just find the contrast of it and the gorgeous park surrounding it to be very moving
-
Have a short time lapse
-
🙏
-
Ok time for sadboy contemplation hour to end and it's getting cold to just sit there so of course I have to get Hiroshima okonomiyaki
-
It's being made
-
Soon
-
Foood
-
That was really good, but so much food and I'm definitely eating at the izakaya I'm going to later..
-
I took some night pics of the dome before I went to drop things off, now I'm going to one my most memorable experiences from my first trip at an izakaya called Oyaji no Mise
-
I'm excited because of that memory but worried the fun of just interacting naturally if there's some other crowd and it won't happen again, we shall see, so far Hiroshima still lived up to my memories as one of my favorite places so here's hoping, bonus 6 year old pic of it
-
This was today's and it wasn't as awesome, I love this place so much, I'll type a bit more when I get back
-
Preview today and 6 years ago
-
So yeah I was there like 3 hours, I was a bit nervous at first but like last time it opened up pretty fast, I talked to the guy next to me who was on a business trip for a bit before he left and we swapped a couple of food items which was great to try more things
-
I think I got some yakisoba and some pork wrapped corn something or other from him and let him have some of the (this time grilled) chicken liver and maguro sushi I got, I didn't take pictures of most of the food unfortunately
-
I didn't expect them to remember me at since I was just one random customer in a 6 year period at restaurant but Masa (on the left in the picture) instantly did because he'd been reminded by a Japan v. Venezuela soccer friendly that took place just yesterday
-
Honestly I can't imagine how that coincidence played out from his pov, but I guess it's helpful to have a not-as-common country to talk about when travelling to have more people remember you, after that most of the time was just spent talking to them and eating waaaaaaay too much
-
And drinking a bunch of new things, they also kept throwing food at me as service to the point where I was a bit mindblown
-
As a courtesy I ended up with some octopus sashimi, then some nicely cooked oysters, then some eihire (stingray fin) to go with a sake I ordered (also alongisde the sashimi platter i got - pictured), a slice of okonomiyaki (again), feel like I'm forgetting onea
-
Anywho the point is they are awesome and I loved taking to them again, I hope to see then again in less than 6 years and highly recommend going if you speak some Japanese (as otherwise you might struggle a bit there and so will they)
-
I learned the guest house keeper is stayed at last time got married and moved away so since then they don't get almost any foreign customers, I got a ride back to the station as they were closing up and is just missed a train and would have had to wait 30
-
They didn't let me pay for almost anything including what I ordered, in short it lived up to my experience last time and I'm so glad I settled on coming to Hiroshima which I almost decided not to go back to since it's a bit out of the way, lots more happened but now I sleep
-
I think I insulted a different shop I was going to try before this one because I didn't know it was also called chuuka soba and they were not happy with me...
